Chinos, also known as Chinese-Mexicans, are a community of people of Chinese descent who live in Mexicali, a city situated in the northern Mexican state of Baja California. The first wave of Chinese immigrants arrived in Mexico in the late 19th century, with many of them working in agriculture and later in various other industries such as mining, retail, and hospitality.
Today, the chino community in Mexicali is estimated to be around 5,000 people. They have made significant contributions to the city's economy, particularly in the food and beverage industry, with many renowned Chinese restaurants and food stands scattered across Mexicali.
However, the community has faced discrimination and prejudice throughout Mexican history, with instances of violence and persecution occurring during the Mexican Revolution and World War II. Despite this, the chino community in Mexicali has managed to preserve its cultural heritage and traditions, such as celebrating the Chinese New Year and maintaining Chinese-language schools.
